How have you been? I've missed writing to you. I hope
you're Prospering and Thriving in the Chaos of this
world we're all blessed to live in for a short while.
Yes, even a healthy hundred years is a short while.
And yes, we are blessed to be here.
Problems, difficulties, pain and pleasure, the good and
the bad. It's all part of the deal when you're born.
You can't choose to be born, or when or to whom you're
born. You're here and that's it.
Here's the good news: you CAN CHOOSE what you will do
with your life, and the results you get.
Were you born into poverty?
Don't give me that excuse - so was James Brown. He only
had one pair of shoes, and they were full of holes.
But he CHOSE. He MADE HIMSELF a millionaire, a cultural
influence, and got to party with presidents and kings,
and leave his mark on music FOREVER. Not to mention fame,
women and money beyond anyone's wildest dreams!
There's now a statue of him in his hometown.
So don't even try the poverty excuse.
If another man, born in worse circumstances than you
can do it, YOU CAN DO IT.
Matter of fact, we can go down the list of bad things
that happen to people, and for each one you offer up as
an excuse, I can give you someone in recent history who
CHOSE and ROSE ABOVE IT.
Born with a handicap?
Shall I mention Hellen Keller, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles,
or Sylvester Stallone.
Stallone was born in poverty-stricken Hells Kitchen, NY,
and an accident at birth caused him to have a droopy lip
and slur which you can still see today if you watch closely
in his movies.
He lacked money. He lacked an advantaged upbringing. But
none of that mattered, because he had within him the forces
of optimism, motivation and heart. I call it "the Warrior
Spirit." And so he rose up to become a multi-millionaire
international superstar, making many inspirational movies
of a determined spirit combined with faith overcoming
adversity.
Lost all your money?
Walt Disney went bankrupt seven times. Can you imagine
if he gave up, even after the sixth bankruptcy? He made
it after all because he simply refused to lose and got back
up twice more.
After his first measure of success, NLP mega-star Tony
Robbins found himself broke, fat, and living in a cheap
studio apartment in Van Nuys. Can you imagine where he'd
be today if he'd stayed down instead of CHOOSING to rise
back up?
Been sexually molested?
Oprah Winfrey was born in rural Mississippi and lived in
abject poverty. While still a child, she was sexually
molested repeatedly by male relatives.
But Oprah didn't let what happened in the past dictate
her future. Instead, she CHOSE a better future, and went
for it unhindered.
Are you a struggling single parent?
J.K. Rowling is the world's wealthiest novelist. When she
got the call from an agent that Bloomsday would publish
her book titled "Harry Potter," she was on welfare
struggling to raise her baby daughter.
Did your parents die when you were young?
Roman Abramovich, the richest man in Russia, was an orphan.
At age 15, Li Ka-shing's father died, and he dropped out of
school to work in a factory. He is now Asia's richest man.
Never met your parents at all, or they didn't want you?
Apple's Steve Jobs was adopted. I'm sure you've heard of
the iPod, iTunes, and Apple Computers. The man is an
enormous success and employs thousands of people with
creativity and heart.
You damn well know it's true. So no more excuses, okay?
Excuses waste your time, and they waste your future as
they keep you focused on the past.
Focus on the future instead. Focus on what YOU WANT.
Don't focus on "why", as in "why did this happen?"
Focus instead on "what", as in "what do I WANT?"
Keep asking for what you want, and go towards it.
You'll never get what you want by focusing on the past.
Yes you can learn from the past, but don't stay there.
Take the learnings and get the hell out of there!
You'll never get what you want by finding comfort in your
excuses. Whatever they are, they're probably not worse
than those I've mentioned here today.
